Soil Analysis

Soil Analysis

All new septic permits issued in Monroe County are required to have a soil analysis done by a Certified Soil Analyst describing the proposed site and the soil. Understanding the soil will aid in determining the ability of the soil to handle the introduction of wastewater. It will also aid in the decisions made in reference to the appropriate type of septic system required for the given soil and site.

The following is a list of Registered Soil Scientist Consultants that have been approved by the Monroe County Health Department's Wastewater Sanitation staff:

*The Monroe County Health Department is not offering the services of a staff Soil Scientist at this time.

Guidance from Monroe County Health:

Presently, this Department is not offering the services of a staff soil scientist to perform the on-site investigation of the soil and site for septic leach fields. You will need to contact and schedule an approved registered soil scientist to complete the required soil test and make sure the report is submitted to this office. A "septic permit" will not be issued without first having the soil test performed and the report submitted. Please follow this protocol to avoid being required to have a soil scientist return for an additional visit to your property.

  1. Contact a contractor from our approved list of septic installers to work with you and your site plan to identify and flag or otherwise mark an area for the proposed leach field. It is advised that you coordinate with your chosen soil scientist to be present with the septic installer when the soil test is performed.

  2. The soil scientist will be required to submit GPS coordinates for each boring site that is tested and submitted as part of the soil report. At least (3) three borings will need to be made (one at each end of the flagged area and one either above or below the flagged area). Each boring site needs to be made 5 to 10 feet from the outer edge of the flagged leach bed(s).
