Emergency Operations Statement:

MONROE COUNTY LEGAL DEPARTMENT

HEALTH EMERGENCY OPERATIONS STATEMENT

In order to promote the public health and to protect the well-being of County personnel during this current health emergency, the Board of Commissioners of Monroe County has directed the closure of the Monroe County Legal Department Offices to the public.  The Board of Commissioners has also directed the Legal Department staff to practice social distancing and to work remotely.  Those directives have been implemented and will remain in place until otherwise directed by the Board of Commissioners.

The Legal Department will continue to function, to the extent reasonably possible, utilizing voice mail, email, text, and teleconferencing.  Staff members will be checking their email accounts and voice mail boxes throughout each day.  Staff will make every effort to promptly respond. 

If you would like to leave a voice mail for Chris Noel or Martha Selk, please call the main number for the Legal Department, i.e., (812) 349-2525.  If you wish to speak with one of the Monroe County Attorneys but are not sure to whom you should direct your call, please call the main number above and your message will be forwarded to the appropriate attorney.   If you know the name of the Monroe County Attorney you wish to speak with, please call them at the following number:

Voice messages left in an attorney’s voice mail box will be forwarded to the attorney’s email account as an audio file for replay and response.

We understand that this emergency operating framework involves limitations and inconvenience.  As we work through this situation, we will gain awareness of those factors and will work to reduce them.  Your suggestions along those lines are welcome and appreciated.  We look forward to resuming our normal operations in the near future.

About the Office

The Monroe County Legal Department is also referred to as the Monroe County Attorneys' Office.  The Legal Department is responsible for drafting and enforcing county ordinances and county codes and for providing legal advice and representation to Monroe County Government officials and employees on government matters.

While the Legal Department is not authorized to provide general legal services to the public, it will provide information concerning Monroe County ordinances and Monroe County codes to the public.

Baker - Primarily represents the Circuit Court/Prosecutor/Public Defender liaison, Clerk/Voter Registration/Election Board, Sheriff, Correctional Center, Probation, Central Dispatch Board, Community Corrections, Highway Department/Traffic Commission/Highway Garage, Animal Management, and Human Resources
