Due to renovation work the Monroe County Building and Planning Departments have been temporarily relocated within the Monroe County Government Center. The Building Department is now located in Suite 201 and the Planning Department is now located in Suite 202. Both are still located at 501 N. Morton Street, just temporarily relocated down the hall.

On June 1, 2016 the Monroe County Plan Commission and Monroe County Board of Commissions officially released an RFP to accept proposals from qualified professional consultants and firms for the updating and rewriting of the Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Control Ordinance to create a Consolidated Development Ordinance. November 10, 2016—Monroe County, IN— The Monroe County Urbanizing Area Plan Phase II is now available to view: http://www.monroecountyurbanizingareaplan.com/. The Plan Commission will hold a public hearing on December 6th at 6 PM in the Judge Nat. U. Hill Meeting Room in the Monroe County Courthouse. The Plan Commission is taking the first round of written public comments through November 22, 2016, which can be submitted via email to the Monroe County Planning Department (jnester@co.monroe.in.us). Public comments can also be made at the December 6th hearing.

A new feasibility study reveals that several Monroe County properties show great solar power potential. The study, titled “GIS Analysis of Solar Energy Potential in Monroe County,” was prepared by Ben Weise, a Service Corps Fellow from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University Bloomington currently working with the Monroe County Planning Department.
