Wastewater Sanitation Minimize

Members of the Monroe County Health Department Wastewater Division advise, inspect and approve the installation of ALL Septic Systems in Monroe County.

Of the inspections conducted, many deal with the repair of existing systems. The repairs can be the result of a septic failure due to damage to the septic field or a holding tank. Replacement of an old abandoned site may require a new system.

The two major reasons for failure of an existing septic system in Monroe County are attributed to either age or abuse. Abuse of a septic system is an undersized system with over-utilization or an injection of water to the field.

When purchasing a home in Monroe County, be sure that the septic field is sized by the number of bedrooms in the home.

An Application for a Septic Permit must be completed by the homeowner when a system needs to be installed or replaced.

NOTE:  Fees for Repair or New Septic System Applications are due at the time you submit your application for requested services.

A real estate inspection could be required for a property transaction, building remodeling (other than the increase of bedrooms), or property subdivision. If the Monroe County Building Department does require a septic permit for an existing home which will change bedroom count, a repair permit will be required, which includes a new soil test.

On septic permit renewal or modifications which will place the septic system in the location of the original site of the initial permit, an additional soil test is not required. If a different site is requested by the builder or owner for the new permit due to a different house location or increase in bedrooms, then a new soil test will be required.
