The Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD)
was established in 1943 by a referendum vote of landowners.
The District is governed by a board supervisors, five
individuals who are county residents. These citizens are
elected by their peers and serve for a three-year term.

The District is a local subdivision of Indiana State
Government, responsible for leadership and education
in the conservation of
Monroe
County’s natural resources: soil, water, air,
wildlife, forests and lakes. The SWCD holds monthly
boarding meetings. Meetings are open to the public.
Cooperation with the District is voluntary. The Soil
and Water Conservation District provides advice,
assistance, and leadership to local land users in
matters concerning natural resource conservation.
Districts work closely with other agency that are
part of the SWCD partnership they include: The
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an
agency of USDA; the Indiana Department of Natural
Resources (IDNR); Purdue Cooperative Extension
(Extension); Farm Service Agency, a division of USDA
(FSA); Rural Development (RD), a division of USDA;
Monroe County (County), the City of Bloomington and
other state and federal agencies.
In partnership with the NRCS and IDNR, the Monroe
County SWCD provides technical assistance to
farmers, homeowners, businesses and industry.
The District also works with units of local, state
and federal government to solve problems of land
use, conservation planning and resource development.
