The Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) was established in 1943 by a referendum vote of landowners. The District is governed by a board supervisors, five individuals who are county residents. These citizens are elected by their peers and serve for a three-year term.

The District is a local subdivision of Indiana State Government, responsible for leadership and education in the conservation of Monroe County’s natural resources: soil, water, air, wildlife, forests and lakes. The SWCD holds monthly boarding meetings. Meetings are open to the public.

Cooperation with the District is voluntary. The Soil and Water Conservation District provides advice, assistance, and leadership to local land users in matters concerning natural resource conservation.

Districts work closely with other agency that are part of the SWCD partnership they include: The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an agency of USDA; the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR); Purdue Cooperative Extension (Extension); Farm Service Agency, a division of USDA (FSA); Rural Development (RD), a division of USDA; Monroe County (County), the City of Bloomington and other state and federal agencies.

In partnership with the NRCS and IDNR, the Monroe County SWCD provides technical assistance to farmers, homeowners, businesses and industry.

The District also works with units of local, state and federal government to solve problems of land use, conservation planning and resource development.
