The Monroe County Assessor's Office maintains property records for the seven small townships; Bean Blossom, Benton, Clear Creek, Indian Creek, Polk, Salt Creek, and Washington.  The property record cards contain the assessed value of the property based on Market Value in use.  We also maintain sales information of properties sold from 1995-Present for the entire county.

The County Auditor is a constitutional officer of the county, elected for a four year term from the county at large with prohibition against serving more than two consecutive terms.

The Monroe County Building Department is responsible for issuing Building Permits and providing follow-up inspections for construction and remodeling projects in the City of Bloomington and throughout Monroe County (except Ellettsville).

The Monroe County Board of Commissioners have a wide range of executive and administrative authority. Among the most important powers are those related to: auditing and authorizing claims against the county, receiving bids and authorizing contracts, controlling, maintaining, and supervising County property including the Courthouse, the Justice Building, which houses the Courts, the elected officials associated with those courts, and the jail, the Health Services Building, the Highway Garage Facility, the Karst Farm Park, the Flatwoods Park, the Jackson Creek Park, and the Youth Services Bureau, supervising construction and maintenance of County roads and bridges, exercising appointive powers including both the selection of members to fill positions on boards, commissions, and committees, and appointment of certain department heads, planning and implementing strategies for solid waste handling as members of the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District.

County Council
Appropriates all funds for county use, adopts county budget, fixes county tax rate, and has exclusive power to borrow money for the county
 
Monroe County is responsible for over 680 miles of roads, 137 bridges, over 2,800 pipes and over 4,000 traffic signs and signals. The Highway Department staff reports directly to the Monroe County Board of Commissioners.
The Human Resource Department maintains the personnel files and employment information for each employee, administers all employee benefits offered by the county, and recruits/refers applicants to the hiring departments.  We are committed to providing the citizens and taxpayers of Monroe County with the most responsive governmental services possible.


Legal Department

The Monroe County Legal Department is also referred to as the Monroe County Attorneys' Office. The Department is responsible for drafting and enforcing county ordinances and codes and for providing legal advice and representation to County government officials and employees on County government matters. While the Department is not authorized to provide general legal services to the public, it will provide information concerning County ordinances and codes to the public.
The Planning Department plays a key role in creating and communicating the vision of the county and acts as the primary coordinating agency in the development, adoption, and implementation of the county's plans and policies. The department provides both current and long range planning services to the general public. The planning staff also provides support to the County Commissioners, the County Plan Commission, the County Board of Zoning Appeals and to outside agencies focusing on development opportunities in Monroe County.

Recorder's Office
The elective office of county recorder was the first local office created by the Constitution of the state of Indiana in 1816. It is the primary duty of county recorders to record instruments submitted for recording and maintain those records for perpetuity. Documents for statistical record keeping purposes fall into four categories: deeds and other conveyances, mortgages and other liens and their releases, miscellaneous documents, and uniform commercial code documents.

Treasurer's Office
The Treasurer is charged with the responsibility of being the custodian of all money belonging to the county, and is responsible for the accounting of  money received and disbursed from county funds. As the county chief financial officer the treasurer is vested with the authority and is charged with the duty of collecting all taxes and assessments which are payable to the county.
