The Monroe County Commissioners established a "First Citizens' Academy".  The Academy provided an opportunity to learn more about County Government.  The Citizens' Academy held seven meetings which covered the following topics: Organization of County Government, Transportation, Land, The Court System, Corrections and Sheriff's Department, and Finances.

The Citizens' Academy was chaired by the Commissioner's Vice-President Joyce Poling.
