WHAT iS THE RAiN GARDEN INiTiATiVE? The Rain Garden Initiative is a coordinated effort by the citizens of Monroe County, Indiana to improve local water quality. Rain Gardens are one of the most cost effective methods of improving water quality. They also provide beautiful landscaping, making for both a more sustainable and a more livable community. |

WHAT iS A RAiN GARDEN? A rain garden is a planted depression that is designed to capture the excess rainwater run-off from impervious surfaces, such as roofs, sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots. The plants in a rain garden include a selection of wetland edge vegetation, such as sedges, rushes, ferns, shrubs and trees. These plants help absorb the excess water, slowing the flow of stormwater and reducing the risk of flooding.
Over a period of days, the water leaves the garden through two processes: infiltration into the ground and transpiration, a process by which plants return water to the atmosphere as vapor. A more wide-ranging definition of "rain garden" covers all the possible elements that can be used to capture, channel, divert, and make the most of the natural rain and snow that falls on a property. |
